Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX Sets New Efficiency Record, Travels 627 Miles on a Single Charge

In a remarkable showcase of electric vehicle (EV) technology, Mercedes-Benz's Vision EQXX has once again shattered its own efficiency records by covering an impressive distance of 627 miles on a single charge. Demonstrating its readiness for global markets, the Mercedes exec highlighted the EV's unparalleled energy efficiency, this time achieving even better results than before.

The journey took the Vision EQXX across the challenging terrain of the Arabian desert, from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to Dubai, UAE. Achieving an astounding efficiency of 8.4 miles per kilowatt-hour, the EV's aerodynamically optimized design proved instrumental in navigating through desert heat and long stretches of empty highways, all while maintaining air conditioning throughout the trip.

Comparative Efficiency and Technological Advancements

This recent accomplishment surpasses its previous feats, including a 626-mile journey from Sindelfingen, Germany, to Cassis, France, at 7.1 miles/kWh in 2022, and a 747-mile trek from Stuttgart to Silverstone at 7.5 miles/kWh. For comparison, the 2023 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD, known for its efficiency, achieves about 3.8 miles/kWh as per EPA ratings.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX has once again demonstrated its exceptional efficiency by traveling 627 miles on a single charge, even surpassing its previous records. This journey, which took the vehicle across the Arabian desert from Riyadh to Dubai, achieved an efficiency of 8.4 miles per kilowatt-hour, showcasing the car's advanced aerodynamics and energy-efficient design. Compared to a 2023 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD, which achieves about 3.8 miles/kWh, the EQXX's performance is notably superior, thanks in part to its streamlined shape and innovative materials like carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Despite the impressive distance and efficiency, it's unclear how much of this technology will be seen in mass-market production cars. The vehicle also featured a 100 kWh battery and a multi-source heat pump, which helped maintain energy efficiency even with the air conditioning running. Mercedes-Benz views the EQXX as a significant step towards electric vehicles' readiness for global markets and a precursor to future models based on its next-generation MMA platform.

The Vision EQXX boasts a drag coefficient of 0.17, making it more aerodynamic than any production sedan on the market. Its design features, such as a streamlined rear and an aero blade under the bumper, along with the use of advanced materials like carbon fiber reinforced plastic, contribute to its exceptional efficiency.

Future Implications and Mercedes-Benz's Commitment

With an average speed of 42.7 miles per hour and delivering 282 MPGe, the EQXX demonstrates the potential of electric drive technology. Its 100 kWh battery operates on a 900-volt system architecture, supported by a multi-source heat pump that minimizes energy losses, proving its capability even in demanding conditions.

Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz AG's chief technology officer, emphasized the successful performance of all systems under the challenging desert environment, underscoring the EV's readiness for global markets.

The Vision EQXX serves as a precursor to the upcoming model family based on Mercedes-Benz's next-generation MMA platform, hinting at the future of electric efficiency technologies. It not only offers a glimpse into the advanced heat pump technology but also sets the stage for the next generation of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including two crossovers and a station wagon, promising an exciting future for electric mobility.
